Sue Ann (Nelson) Batts Sue was born March 23, 1947 to Albert and Lucille Nelson and grew up on a cattle ranch in rural, western Colorado. She earned a Gates Family Foundation scholarship in 1965 at high school graduation and completed a BA in 1969 and an MA in 1970 from the University of Denver. Sue taught for one year at the United States Air Force Academy school district in Colorado Springs before marrying the love of her life, Gary Batts, on June 19, 1971 and joining him at Indiana University where he was in graduate school. During their time in Bloomington, she taught at the University School. After Gary's graduation, his career brought them to Little Rock, Arkansas where she worked in Federal Programs for the Little Rock Public Schools. Six years later Gary's career brought them to Toledo, and for 23 years Sue worked as an adjunct at Owens Community College. The most fulfilling part of Sue's wonderful life was sharing it with Gary and, together, rearing their beloved daughters, Emily (James) Curbo of Silver Spring, Maryland, and Elizabeth Batts, Esquire of Bratenahl, Ohio. A memorial service will be held at Park Church UCC on Saturday, January 6 at 2pm. Reception to follow. Private, graveside services are pending in Basalt, Colorado. No flowers please. Consider the Eleanor N. Dana Cancer Center at the University of Toledo Medical Center, Hospice of Northwest Toledo, or Park Church UCC for memorials. -- Written by Sue Batts
