Ruth Evelyn, "Billie" Meffley was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan on September 18, 1912. Her life ended peacefully at Sunset Village in Sylvania ,Ohio on November 23, 2011. Billie was the daughter of Arthur J. and Nina Kitson . Her family moved to Toledo in 1915. She and her sister, Helen, attended East Side Central Elementary School and graduated from Waite High School. Billie earned her nursing degree from Flower Hospital School of Nursing. She was a registered nurse and x ray technician. Her nursing career included service as Lt. J. G. in the Navy Nurses Corp during World War II. Billie married Dr. Wiliam Harold Meffley at Epworth Methodist Church in Toledo on December 27, 1950.During the years they lived on River Road in Maumee she enjoyed an active life which included world travels, golf, bridge , entertaining family and friends and the study of drawing and painting. The home they built included a woodworking shop for Dr. Meffley and studio for Billie. Billie also displayed exceptional talent in needlework. Friends and family appreciated gifts of her painting and needlework. Although she did not recognize it, to her family and friends Billie was a model for preparing for a long life. Her broad reading choices reflected her many interests . Years of swimming at the Toledo Club were a part of a successful fitness plan . Travel and time with friends were part of her lifelong education. Billie and Dr. Meffley had no children but she was cherished by the families of her three nieces, Robin, Nan and Beth. Billie was preceded in death by her parents , Dr. Meffley, her sister , Helen Gross, brother in law, Robert Gross, nephew, Michael Williams and dear friend, Carl Campbell. Billie is survived by her three nieces, Robin Gross McAlear(Charles Andrew) , South Haven, Michigan ,Nanette Gross Williams ,El Paso, Texas, Beth Gross Duvendack (Dan) Monroe, Michigan. She will also be remembered by nine grand nieces and nephews and thirteen great grand nieces and nephews. Her family expresses appreciation for the kindness and support of friends and staff at Sunset Village where she lived for six years. Her brief time with Ashanti Hospice contributed to peace and dignity at the end of her life. A memorial service will be December 8th at 2 o'clock at the Sunset Village chapel 9640 Sylvania - Metamora Road in Sylvania,Ohio. Suggestions for memorial donations include Planned Parenthood , American Cancer Society, or charity of donors' choice. Arrangements by The Bersticker-Scott Funeral Home.
