Matilda Ann 'Tillie' Magrum

Early September 25, Matilda A. Magrum, 93, died peacefully at the Toledo Hospice of Northwest Ohio. Tillie was born in Toledo to Conrad and Betty Jantz on November 7, 1916. Graduating from Libbey High in 1934, Tillie worked at the A.P. Parts Corp. from 1935 until after WWII. While there she especially loved working the switchboard. As a young woman Tillie purchased a piano and a car, early signs of her independent, zestful approach to life. Tillie loved roller-skate dancing, which is how she met her husband Larry Magrum in 1941. Over the years she had fun square dancing, bike riding, and watching drum corps. Happily a stay-at-home mom, she did occasionally work for short periods at A.P. Parts. A member of St. Charles Church, Tillie volunteered as a lunchroom lady and in the kitchen for charity events, was the parish secretary for the DDF (Annual Catholic Appeal) first with Fr. Hug and then with three successive pastors. She ran the parish Red Cross Blood Drive, always surpassing the goal through the generosity of parish volunteers and donors. Tillie loved babies and kids. She was a wonderful mom and later a delighted grandma to her two grandsons Jon and Jason. Family and friends often turned to her to babysit, which made the child and Tillie very happy. Older friends and family members were also blessed by Tillie's care-giving nature. In later years Tillie and Larry enjoyed traveling around the U.S. with their dear friends Eldora and Joe Burtscher. Tillie loved music, stopping to play her signature piece "Glowworm" on the piano whenever the spirit moved. Everyone also knew of her especial love of chocolate and a "dessert first" approach to dining out. Survivors include daughter, Donna Jean; son, Rick and daughter-in-law Barb of Prospect, KY; grandsons, Jonathon and Jason; sister-in-law, Myra Magrum; and many niece and nephews. Tillie was preceded in death by her beloved husband of nearly 60 years, Larry; young son, Robert; and sisters, Virginia and Betty.
