Lois Jacquelyn "Jackie" Smith Mitchell, age 84 formerly of Toledo, Ohio passed away peacefully at Grace Healthcare, Three Rivers, MI where she had been residing since May, 2017. The middle child of Howard Glenn Smith and Margaret Inez (Maynard) Smith, she was born in Toledo, Ohio on May 31, 1933. Jackie graduated from DeVilbiss High School in 1951, and cum laude from the University of Toledo, 1955 with a degree in Elementary Education. Jackie married James S. Mitchell on June 25, 1955. She taught 1st & 2nd grade at McKinley School in Toledo for 5 1/2 years, leaving to start her family in 1960. While raising her children she was an active Girl Scout leader, a member of the PTA, Mother's Club and worked in the library at Old Orchard school & consolidated the Bancroft Hills library into Old Orchard. She was an avid crafter enjoying crewel embroidery, cake decorating, felt & fabric crafts. Jackie made beautiful gift packages at Christmas, often with 3 dimensional scenes and clues to the contents. After Jim passed away in 1980 Jackie filled her time with doll collecting and traveling. She visited over 15 countries and many parts of the United States. She made lovely scrapbooks chronicling her travels which she shared with friends and family. She enjoyed learning the history of the various countries and seeing all of the sights and cultures. Jackie was a baptized member of Monroe St. United Methodist Church and in later years a member of Trilby United Methodist Church; singing in the choir at both churches. Jackie will be dearly missed by her daughter Kathleen Kay Mitchell Marvin (Greg), Vicksburg, MI, son Kevin James Mitchell (Rebecca), Lake Park, MN and brother Richard Lowell Smith (Judith), San Diego, CA. Jackie was blessed with several grandchildren: Kaitlyn Marie Marvin Bigelow (Joe), Vicksburg, MI, Gregory R. Marvin, Jr., Richland, MI, Emma Grace Ann & Eden Faye Mitchell, step grandchildren Ryan & Greg Olson, all of Lake Park, MN. She also had 4 great-grandchildren, Cassandra, Christopher, Mackenzie & Thomas Bigelow, Vicksburg, MI. 3 nieces, 2 nephews & children. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Mary Lucille Reinhart. The family will receive friends in the Chapel of Peace at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park on Tuesday, December 12, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. with graveside services to follow at 11:30 a.m. Arrangements by the Bersticker-Scott Funeral Home 3453 Heatherdowns Blvd., Toledo, Ohio.
