Hubert Eli Gonia

GONIA, H. Eli Eli Gonia of Toledo, OH passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 15 at 89 years of age. Eli was born on December 29, 1920 to Eli and Marie Gonia in Benton Harbor, Michigan. He was active in Scouting as a young man and again with his sons in later years. As a Boy Scout, he traveled to the 1939 World's Fair in New York City as well as New England and Canada. By 1940 he enlisted in the US Navy, serving his country through the war years until honorably discharged in 1947 as Chief Motor Machinist Mate. After leaving the service, Eli came to Toledo where he met and married his wife of 60 years, Florence (Russell). Eli was employed at American Lincoln, Toledo Steel Tube and retired from DeVilbiss. In retirement, he and Florence enjoyed traveling the country from New England to Southern California. He particularly enjoyed many visits with his brother, Charles, in Los Angeles and sister, Jeanette, near his birthplace in Michigan. Eli is survived by and missed by his wife, Florence, sons, Douglas and Scott. A private graveside service will be held for the family at Toledo Memorial Park Cemetery.
