Charles Morris 'Scottie' Scott Sr.

Charles M. Scott, Sr., age 80 of South Toledo, passed away suddenly in the ER at UTMC on June 29, 2017 after a lengthy illness. He was born November 21, 1936 in Kipton, Ohio to Charles H. and Elva K. (Crouse) Scott. He attended Camden High School and Bluffton College where he played football and baseball for the Beavers. He then went on to graduate from the Pittsburgh Institute of Mortuary Science and began his 60th year career in the funeral business in Toledo at the former Bennett Funeral Home. He became manager of the Boyer-Van Wormer Funeral Home in 1971 and eventually purchased the business from the Van Wormer Family. In 1985, he acquired the Bersticker Funeral Home. His two sons, Charles Jr. and Robert, followed in Charles' footsteps and joined him in running the businesses. Charles, affectionately known as "Scottie", met his wife JoAnn (Bodnar) through mutual friends and they recently celebrated their 56th anniversary together. They enjoyed fishing and camping trips to Canada when the boys were young and then got involved with Quarter Midget Racing which took them to many Midwestern tracks. He was known to work relentlessly on many blown engines. Charlie was a gifted craftsman and loved woodworking. No project was too complex for him to tackle. This talent combined with love of the water led to many hours devoted to rebuilding wooden boats. He was a member of both the Toledo Yacht Club and Bayview Yacht Club and served on various committees over the years. He was a past Bridge Officer and Commodore of the Toledo Yacht Club as well as a member of the Toledo Power Squadron. He was a member of Ashland Ave. Baptist Church and served on various church committees. He was also a former member of the Barton Smith Lodge, Shrine and the Elks. Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, sister Mary Frances Joy.
