Carl Richard Ritter

Carl Richard Ritter, age 89, died peacefully Thursday morning, August 24th at The Lakes of Monclova, surrounded by his loving family and caring staff from "The Lakes" and Hospice of Northwest Ohio. Carl was born on February 21, 1928 in Toledo, OH to William and Alberta (Path) Ritter; and was preceded in death by his sister, Helen (Bretz). He attended Libby High School and on August 14, 1948, Carl married Alice Wilhelm and began raising his family. He started his career in the Navy and Carl loved to tell stories about his deployment to the South Pole. It was easy to see how proud he was when he talked about serving under the command of Admiral Richard E. Byrd. After leaving the Navy, Carl worked on the Great Lakes Central Railroad for 12 years. Carl went to work at GM Powertrain - often working seven days a week as a plumber and pipefitter until he retired in 1991, after 34 years of devoted employment. Carl was a very hard worker, at home as well as at work, no matter what project he tackled, he always approached it with thoughtful skill and precision. He also loved being a part of things bigger than himself. Carl was a longtime Mason and was very active for more than 35 years. He was a member of the former Triad Lodge, now the Barton Smith Lodge #613 F & AM (Free and Accepted Masonry), Triune Chapter #344 Order of the Eastern Star (OES) and the Scottish Rite. His posts and activities within these organizations are too numerous to mention, but none the less important to him. Carl also loved his church. He was baptized at St. Lucas Lutheran Church in Toledo, OH and was a dedicated, active member for most of his 89 years. Carl dearly loved his family and is survived by his loving wife, Alice (Wilhelm); sons, Richard Ritter (Lyn), Thomas Ritter (Sue) and Robert Ritter (Lori); grandchildren, Theresa Ritter, Amy Ritter, Nick Ritter, Kathleen Coci, Meghann Coci, Melissa Warncke and Jennifer Ross; great grandchildren, Kaysie Gunn, Kyle Gunn, Zach Taft and Tyler Taft. Visitation will be held at Bersticker-Scott funeral home on Heatherdowns Blvd. at Byrne Rd, on Sunday, August 27th from 4 PM to 8 PM with a service by the Barton Smith Masonic Lodge at 7:30 PM. The funeral service will take place on Monday, August 28th at 10 AM, at St. Lucas Lutheran Church at 725 Walbridge Ave, Toledo, OH. Those wishing to make a donation in memory of Carl, may wish to consider St. Lucas Lutheran Church or Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
