Barbara Ann St. John Barbara Ann St. John of West Toledo died on February 1, 2016 in her home as she desired. She was 79 years old. She was the daughter of Dorothy Eleanor Hygon St. John and Paul Lewis St. John. She attended Whittier Elementary School and DeVilbiss High School (Class of 1954) and was involved in many school activities. She was Literary Editor of the Pot O' Gold yearbook and President of Zetalethians Literary Society. She earned three degrees from The University of Toledo. Her Bachelors in Education in 1958, masters in Elementary Curriculum in 1960, and her doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction Administration in 1973. In her undergraduate years she was involved in numerous programs and served as Treasurer of Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority. Her career as a language arts teacher began in the Toledo Public Schools in 1958 at Riverside and Warren Elementary Schools, then on to Point Place Junior High and Longfellow. She also served as an administrative intern and language arts specialist. After receiving her doctorate she taught at The University of Toledo, Baldwin Wallace, Mary Manse, Siena Heights. Eastern Michigan, and Bowling Green State University. She was a consultant in Gifted and Talented Programming for the Lenawee Intermediate School District. She served Pilgrim Church of the United Church of Christ and St. Andrews Episcopal as Director of Christian Education. She enjoyed her students at all levels. She is probably best known for her more than 38 years of Children's Literature Reviews in the Toledo Blade. She also published many articles on children's literature and children's authors. Dr. St. John was pre-deceased by her parents and her nephew Kenneth Richard St. John and many of her pets. She is survived by her brother Dr. Richard A. St. John (Lauretta) and her cousin Dr. Thomas J. Cooney (Sara) and niece Jocelyn Elizabeth St. John and nephew Kirk Charles (K.C.) St. John. She is also fondly remembered by her great nieces and nephews Zachary St. John, Chad, Julia, Andrew, and Dominic Diesing, and Madison and Alexandra St. John. Her cat Henry has moved on to another caring family. Special thanks to Jocelyn St. John for her many years of caring for Barbara. Interment will be in Toledo Memorial Park in Sylvania, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, should one desire, memorials may be made to the Mazza Museum (of children's book illustrators), University of Findlay, 1000 N.
